£1.4m Teifi Fyw project starts at the river’s head

The Teifi rises in the Elenydd bogs above Pontrhydfendigaid and is already tired by the time it reaches Cardigan. A new partnership is trying to treat the whole river as one place, not a string of parish rows.

Teifi Fyw, Living Teifi: People and Nature Together, has £1.4 million from the National Lottery Heritage Fund for a two-year development phase. If that holds, partners want more than £10 million over five years to restore water, habitat and the stories that sit on the banks.

Natural Resources Wales is coordinating. Around the table: West Wales Rivers Trust, the Mining Remediation Authority, Strata Florida Trust, Mentera, Ceredigion Council, the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales, and the UNESCO-MOST BRIDGES hub at Trinity Saint David. The point, they say, is to mix science with the people who already live on the water, farmers above Tregaron, coracle men at Cenarth, sewin anglers, abbey volunteers.

Strata Florida is the right emblem. The Cistercians chose the valley for the same reason the river still matters: wet ground, timber, a road to the west. The Trust already runs the abbey and surrounding land as a cultural and ecological site. Putting it on the Teifi Fyw board keeps the source in the picture while the arguments about sewage and phosphates play out downstream.

Development work is not a new weir. It is maps, oral history, farm trials and a plan the catchment can live with. For Bont and Ystrad Fflur that is at least a seat at the table, not another report written in Cardiff about a river they can see from the kitchen.
